I wrote this when a short story I was working on just didn’t want to work the way I writing it… It kept wanting to be in verse! ~H.

He steps in the doorway
Sets his pack at his feet
The house is so cold now
His heart misses a beat
He promised her truly
He’d return at the end.
They’d laugh and dance lightly
They’d kiss and hold hands

But he feels a monster
Just
underneath his skin
They
made him a monster
To
fight a war they’d never win

He calls out in the darkness
Shadows crowding close
Not expecting a sound
From his love of time ago
He’s been away for too long now
Standing up for the throne
Fighting all of the demons
And he fears he’s alone

Because he feels a monster
He’s still under their spell
They made him a monster
To defeat their own version of Hell

He hears his name whispered
She’s there by the stair
Waiting where he left her
More than he can bear
He’s been broken in pieces
She’s scarred and she’s worn
He reaches to hold her
And together they’re whole.

They made him a monster
With her there is no Hell
Inside there was a monster
And she has broken the spell

And she has broken the spell…

He’d return at the [Am] end.

But [Am] he [Em] feels a monster

[C] Just [G] underneath his [Em] skin

They [Am] made him a [Em] monster

[C] To [G] fight a [C] war they’d never [Am] win

He calls out in the darkness

Shadows crowding close

Not expecting a sound

From his love of time ago

He’s been away for too long now

Standing up for the throne

Fighting all of the demons

And he fears he’s alone[1]

Because he feels a monster

He’s still under their spell

They made him a monster

To defeat their own version of Hell

He hears his name whispered

She’s there by the stair

Waiting where he left her

More than he can bear

He’s been broken in pieces

She’s scarred and she’s worn

He reaches to hold her

And together they’re whole.

They made him a monster

Inside there was a monster

And she has broken the spell

And she has broken the spell…

    1. Thank you, Kenzie! 🙂

I’ve got the tune all written down and chorded — came to me on my way home from work a couple weeks ago… Now I just need to get my recording setup fixed and I can make a cut of it.
