I just uploaded a clip of me singing the folk song “Will Ye Go, Lassie?” aka. “Wild Mountain Thyme,” and accompanying myself with Ook.

This beautiful song is one of those that maintains its popularity with folk and traditional musicians through the ages. The melody is pretty and the words are timeless… And yet, people who study such things are not entirely sure where it’s origins lie. The simple fact that all the words remain unchanged back to the earliest recorded version (1957 by Frank McPeake) hint that the song is more modern than most ‘traditional’ fare. On the other hand, Mr. McPeake is quoted to have said, “There is a song that I heard an old uncle of mine singing years and years ago. It’s ‘Will ye go, lassie, go?‘”

It seems no one knows for sure. Either way, ‘Will Ye Go, Lassie’ remains a staple of the acoustic/trad jam night scene. And that is part of the fun. 🙂
