Speaking of things being “worth it,” someone over at the Absolute Write Forums (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums) posted a rant about the payment of short story writers. Apparently we don’t make much. (Really? Been writing for over a year and have yet to see royalties…..) But I was rather chuffed to see several others jump into the thread with the counter-attack that “we don’t do it for money, we do it because it’s FUN!”
That’s what I like to hear, quite honestly. Short stories should be fun. They should be exciting, exhilarating, a wild romp through the mind’s rollercoaster. The writer should be getting just as big of a kick out of the tale as the reader.
In terms of creativity, I believe the end result — the act of writing, of creating art — should always be “worth it.”
